At (the) T at VBTI – Making Automation Intelligent!
This time, on the advice of Robert van Gompel (Watt Infra), the T-pot went to neighbor VBTI, where Cecile and Boudie had a conversation with Laurie Bax.
What does your company do?
Laurie: "Our credo really says it all: 'Making Automation Intelligent' – making automation smarter with artificial intelligence. Currently, VBTI is developing intelligent software for, among others, the agricultural and manufacturing sectors. Think of picking robots that learn when to pick or not, or inspection tools that detect scratches on parts. Smart technology that truly makes a difference."
What stands out is the presence of many young employees. VBTI currently has 14 employees, almost all between 25 and 30 years old, at the beginning of their careers and incredibly eager to learn. Laurie explains: "It is also very inspiring here to be able to work daily on smart automation and AI solutions with Deep Learning technology under the guiding enthusiastic leadership of Albert van Breemen from the Innovation Powerhouse with a team of peers and like-minded individuals."
"When I discovered VBTI through LinkedIn and read about what they were doing, I immediately knew: I want to work here! And also at Strijp-T, close to home, in an inspiring environment. Here in the Innovation Powerhouse, everything comes together: innovation, collaboration, and friendliness."
At VBTI, it's not just about technology, but also about conviviality and connection with each other. “We regularly organize activities with our neighbors in this building, like a BBQ recently. This is how we all have lunch at a long lunch table in the central hall, and the coffee machine in the hall is a central gathering point and meeting place.
What is your role?
"As an MLOps Lead engineer, I am involved in the development of a tool that allows for easy creation of applications that collect data, learn independently, and continue to improve. Consultants can make their applications smarter with this."
"Being part of an active, sociable community makes it extra fun here. For me, the Strijp-T Tournament is the highlight of all community activities. Many of us are cycling enthusiasts, and having fun together is always enjoyable. A joint treasure hunt with tasks was also very fun to do. We got to know people from other Strijp-T companies even faster because we were mixed into different groups. This naturally leads to conversations with each other to solve the tasks."
With whom and why do you want us to go on (the) T next time?
Laurie pointed to Podoprinter – not only a good neighbor but also a company where we have used AI to make their printers smarter. This way, waste during the printing of insoles is reduced through early detection. A great collaboration that Bart Wijnands is surely eager to tell more about!
