Unveiling of artwork Drents Dorp in Eindhoven after a year of hard work

EINDHOVEN - Around 150 residents of the Drents Dorp were present on Saturday afternoon for the unveiling of the artwork 'the Drentslamp' at the roundabout between Zwaanstraat and Halve Maanstraat. The artwork - a light bulb with a family inside - is a lasting reminder of the connection between Philips and the Drents Dorp. Thirty children from the neighborhood unveiled the artwork by removing the covering sheet.

For almost a year, residents of the Drents Dorp neighborhood in Eindhoven have worked hard and with great enthusiasm on an artwork. Under the guidance of visual artist Ed van Gennip, a huge Philips light bulb has been created, surrounded by a sash depicting the characteristic houses of the neighborhood. A family with a man, woman, and children is leaning against the light bulb.
Green Corridor
This art project was started in 2018 to celebrate the 90th anniversary of the neighborhood. The location, the roundabout Halvemaanstraat/Zwaanstraat, is a central spot in the neighborhood and is part of the Green Corridor between Eindhoven and Oirschot. It is situated at the intersection of the former Philips factories at Strijp-R, Strijp-T, and Strijp-S.
Local residents
The special thing about this new artwork in Eindhoven is that about 65 neighborhood residents contributed to the project. Whether as a potter or handyman, model, actor, writer, baker, advisor, garden designer, photographer, or fundraiser, builder or debris remover. Also, 165 students from Strijpdorp primary school actively participated in the school project "Look where I live!" That's where the name "de Drentslamp" originated.
The Drents Dorp was built in the 1920s. It was a neighborhood where Philips housed its workers whom they brought from the province of Drenthe to Eindhoven. There are approximately 1,000 mainly pre-war cheap and small houses. Strijp-R is still under development but essentially belongs to Drents Dorp as well.
